OSHA requires powered industrial trucks to be examined before being placed in service, at least daily, and trucks with defects affecting safe operation to be taken out of service until repaired (29 CFR 1910.178(q)(7)). Use this checklist as a starting point and adapt it to the manufacturer's instructions for each truck.
Visual checks — engine off
- Forks, carriage and mast free of cracks, bends and excessive wear
- Chains and fasteners intact, properly adjusted and lubricated
- Hydraulic hoses and cylinders free of leaks
- Tires and wheels in good condition; correct pressure on pneumatic tires
- Overhead guard and load backrest in place and undamaged
- Data plate legible and matches attachments
- Battery or fuel system secure; no leaks; connectors undamaged
- Fluid levels — hydraulic, engine oil, coolant — within range
Operational checks — engine on
- Horn, lights and backup alarm operate
- Service and parking brakes function properly
- Steering responds without excessive play
- Lift, lower and tilt controls operate smoothly without drift
- Seat belt and operator restraint function
- Gauges and warning lights operate
If a defect is found
- Do not operate the truck.
- Tag the truck out of service and notify your supervisor.
- Record the defect with a description and photo.
- Maintenance repairs; an authorized person verifies before return to service.
